Elon Musk created a company called X.AI Corporation about a month ago, which will focus on developing artificial intelligence solutions. Many experts see Musk’s new invention as a response to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, the AI chatbot that has been much talked about lately. Let’s see what’s going on below.

What are Musk’s plans for X.AI Corp

X.AI Corp, officially created in Nevada on 9 March 2023, according to reconstructions by The Wall Street Journal and The Verge, is the new reality that may be the reason Musk recently bought 10,000 GPUs and hired experts in the field, as reported by Business Insider.

It was initially speculated that that amount of GPUs required to train generative AI, might have something to do with Twitter. However, it was already suspected that the Tesla genius wanted to create a competitor to OpenAI.

It is worth recalling that the latter is a company that Musk himself helped establish, but which he no longer considers to be in line with his vision, so much so that he signed a letter asking for a six-month suspension in the development of generative AI.

Indeed, Musk has made no secret of his fear that one day overdeveloped and underregulated AI could prove counterproductive for humankind, a worrisome scenario around which there has always been much debate.

In any case, OpenAI has formed a partnership with Microsoft, and so Musk has decided to create X.AI, a name that portrays that of X Corporation, the holding company into which Twitter has also merged.

“X” is not only a brand, but also a vision for the billionaire entrepreneur, who since the purchase of Twitter has already been talking about evolving into X, an app for doing everything: payments, chatting and more, similar to what is already happening in China with WeChat.

The new company has Elon Musk as the sole administrator, while Jared Birchall, his family’s office manager, would figure as secretary.

AI dominates the market: Musk participates in competition with X.AI Corp

As is well known, the success of the OpenAI system, and ChatGPT in particular, has spurred an artificial intelligence arms race throughout the tech world. Not surprisingly, reports about Musk’s new start-up follow news about Amazon’s AI competitor, Bedrock.

All of this proves that generative AI has dominated the industry so far in 2023. As we have seen, the increasing prevalence of ChatGPT has undoubtedly shaken up the world of technology.

As a result, as the generative AI market has expanded, the industry has been flooded with companies seeking their own dimension in this space. Now, even Elon Musk has entered the competition, as anticipated, with X.AI Corp, ChatGPT’s potential future rival.

Specifically, the Financial Times report states the following:

“Musk is looking to hire engineers, attract investors and acquire chips needed to build large language models.”

In addition, Musk is reportedly in talks with SpaceX and Tesla investors about the new venture. Apparently, a group of people are investing in the billionaire entrepreneur’s new projects with no small amount of enthusiasm.

Elon Musk and his concerns about artificial intelligence

Before X.AI Corp, when speaking at the World Government Summit in Dubai, Elon Musk expressed his concerns about ChatGPT and the role of AI as a potential risk to civilization.

CNBC reported on the appearance featuring Musk discussing the development of artificial intelligence. Specifically, the entrepreneur called AI one of the biggest risks to the future of civilization and discussed how ChatGPT has spread to the world in ways that only technology can spread:

“It is both positive and negative and has great promise, great capabilities. However, with that comes great danger.”

In addition, Musk said the program has illustrated to people how advanced AI has become, adding the following:

“Artificial intelligence has been advanced for a while. It just didn’t have a user interface that was accessible to most people.”

After that, the conversation shifted to regulatory concerns about AI. A sentiment with which Musk seemed to strongly agree:

“I think we need to regulate the safety of AI, frankly. I think it’s actually a bigger risk to society than cars or places or medicines.”
